Guest Post: Sondrae Bennett

This week I'm welcoming Sondrae Bennett to the blog. Sondrae has a new book available through Lyrical Press, and look at its beautiful cover!

Covert Desires by Sondrae Bennett

Will desire be enough once all their secrets are revealed?

Still recovering from a traumatic assignment, Amber is wary of the man who shows up at her door with a plate of cookies and a welcoming smile. Instinct warns her he’s not all he seems. Then again, neither is she. Since she was sent to root out the secrets of the town and its people, she might as well accept his invitation to dinner. But when things start to heat up between them, will her loyalty lie with her job, or the man trying to win her heart?

Danny knows Amber is an FBI agent. Tasked by his brothers and the shifter council to keep her from discovering too much, he sets out to seduce her, a perfect cover to keep an eye on her and make sure she doesn’t learn about his pack or their society. He hadn’t counted on a blazing attraction at first sight, though. His wolf knows Amber is his mate, and he’ll do anything to keep her safe and happy. But how can he reveal everything he is, and everything he’s been keeping from her, without losing her forever?

Amber put her hands on Danny’s chest as he leaned in and brushed his lips over hers. Pleasure rushed through her, pooling in her belly, but she turned her head to the side, determined to maintain control.

Instead of being deterred, he grazed his lips against her cheek, sliding them toward her ear. A shot of lust spiraled toward her core. She closed her eyes against the rush of sensations.

Everything inside begged her to lean into the embrace. To catch his lips with her own and lose herself in passion.

But in the end it came down to duty. When she’d taken this assignment, she’d sworn to herself and to her boss, that she’d prove the doubters wrong. And if that meant she had to resist temptation, then she’d resist. No matter how much she wished otherwise, or how much she wished to be someone else. To be a woman without the baggage of her job. One who could lean into Danny and take everything he promised.

She gave herself a moment. One small moment to bask in the comfort and pleasure before pushing against his chest. For a second, she thought he wasn’t going to back up, and a flash of fear took her back to another time, when a man had pretended to care for her only to turn against her when he learned she was an agent and responsible for taking down major members of his cartel.

Danny backed away so quickly Amber stumbled against him and almost lost her footing. Hard hands gripped her shoulders as he leaned down and stared directly into her eyes.

“What’s the matter?” he demanded. Concern reflected in the brown depths. Concern for her, she realized with a start. He’d been so in tune to her body and emotions, he’d sensed her mental recoil when she’d flashed back.

She stared at him, amazed at the realization.

“Amber?” Impatience and worry clear in his voice.

“Nothing,” she choked out, coughing against the tightness in her throat. “Nothing’s the matter,” she said with more certainty. “It’s… We’re moving a bit fast for me. I just met you. I need some time to think, is all. It’s been a rough morning.” All true, but she hadn’t included her real reason for pulling away. She could never give in to the pull she felt toward him.

“Are you sure that’s all?” he asked, his hand cupping her cheek while the other moved up and down her arm.

The security he offered felt like a warm blanket surrounding her. She hadn’t expected to find comfort here. Looking up into Danny’s eyes, she knew the concern was genuine. He was beginning to care for her. A pang built in her chest, because when all of this was over, she was going to hurt him.

Amber swallowed against the lump in her throat. After everything that had happened that morning--the nightmare and the attack--the realization that she would hurt this man, who’d not only come to her rescue against a pack of crazed wolves, but had offered her comfort when she’d needed it most, caused tears to well up in her eyes. What she wouldn’t give to be the woman he thought she was.

This week we're celebrating the core component of the romance novel - what's known in the business as the HEA, or the Happy Ever After. It was only when I first started writing romance that I became aware of the difference between a romance and a novel (or play) with romantic elements. Romeo and Juliet is a romance, right? Wrong. No HEA, therefore it has romantic elements rather than being a romance.

I sometimes wonder why romance is such a popular genre when a reader can guess the outcome of the book usually from the first page. But therein lies the answer - ultimately it's not about the outcome, but about the journey. I'm in my forties now - I've met and married the man of my dreams, had a child, gone to university, emigrated... I've completed most of the rites of passage, which can be a little bit depressing, but reading and writing romance allows me to live through these wonderful moments of my life over and over again. There's a magic to falling in love, and through reading romance we get to experience it again every time we open a new cover and delve into the pages.

Every single one of my novels has a HEA, and my stories are filled with that romantic journey, from the moment when the hero and heroine first meet, to the first kiss, to the first time they have sex (did I mention they're racy romances?) to that wonderful moment where they realise they're in love.

My next release is due out on February 4th from Lyrical Press. It's a very sexy contemporary "friends to lovers" or "brother's best mate" romance set in New Zealand and the magical city of Beijing in China. Here's the wonderful cover:

And here's the blurb:

Gossip says he is hot between the sheets. Has Mr. Insatiable finally met his match?

Enya’s been curious about Kit’s bedroom exploits ever since his ex-girlfriend spilled the beans about his…skill. But he’s not for her. Enya can’t provide what he wants from life, especially not between the sheets.

After Enya admits she’s not good at sex, Kit persuades her to trust in him. Together, they can create fireworks in the bedroom. A few drinks followed by a discussion about kinky sex, and Enya succumbs to his charm.

Thrilled he’s been proven correct, Kit can’t keep his hands off Enya, and she’s unable, and unwilling, to resist him. But is it just great sex…or something more?

Sexy, sizzling hot romance. Please read with air conditioning on.

Buy links aren't available yet, but I thought I'd whet your whistle a bit before the big day. Want a snippet?

When he paused to kiss her hair again, she whispered, “Do you think I’m attractive?” It was a provocative statement, but the need for reassurance after her breakup was too great to resist.

Kit stilled, and she wondered whether she’d overstepped the invisible boundary they’d erected over the years. Just like Tristan had always done, Kit had commented on her burgeoning figure as she’d grown up, made lewd comments when she’d worn a bikini and teased her about the generous size of her breasts, but it had always been done in a brotherly way, in front of the rest of the family. He’d never crossed that line and been suggestive or touched her inappropriately. When they were alone, he was the perfect gentleman, honorable and polite, even if he did continue to tease her, she’d never felt uncomfortable with him. Sometimes she’d wondered whether he actually realized she’d grown up.

He moved back and looked down at her. Even though she wore three-inch heels, he towered over her, his shoulders broad beneath his jacket. She waited for him to make a joke, laugh, or look uncomfortable at being asked to say something personal like that.

Instead, to her surprise, he cupped her face with his hands. Looking into her eyes, he held her gaze for a moment, his blue eyes alight with desire. To her astonishment, he smiled wolfishly and lowered his head.

She stood, transfixed, as he pressed his lips to hers. They were firm and warm, and she waited, breathless, while he kissed her, his mouth moving across hers with tender affection. Her mind raced. He was only trying to comfort her. Brother to sister. As if she were kissing Tristan. Yeuch.

Only it wasn’t yeuch. And it wasn’t remotely like how she imagined kissing her brother would be.

She rested her palms on his chest, surprised at the firmness of his muscles beneath her fingers. She’d seen him shirtless in the summer, hugged him and given him teasing pushes a gazillion times, but she’d never touched him. With his lips still slowly brushing hers, and her heart thudding, she moved her hands up and traced his collarbone beneath the white shirt, and then lifted her hands over his shoulders and around his neck, expecting him to draw back, laughing.

Instead of pulling away, Kit’s arms came around her, strong and tight, his hands sliding down her back to her hips. He pulled her against him, and to her complete and utter shock, pressed the hard length of his erection against her, obvious proof he didn’t feel as if he were kissing a sibling either.

Enya’s mouth opened and she gasped, inhaling sharply when his warm tongue brushed hers. For a second she froze, completely taken aback by his reaction, as confused as she had been in her dream by what he was doing and her reaction to him. He stilled, but before he pulled away, desire shot through her, and her instincts took over. Plunging her tongue into his mouth, she threaded her hands through his hair, pressing herself against him, molding her body to his.

Kit groaned, his hands tight on her butt. Unfamiliar yearning swept through her, and she tightened her hands in his hair, grazing her teeth against his bottom lip, pleasure mounting as he deepened the kiss.

She’d forgotten about the heels. She didn’t wear them very often, and when she lifted herself on tiptoe to press her breasts against his chest, she lost her balance. His weight pushed her back the six inches to the wall behind her, and she hit it with a jolt hard enough to make her gasp and break the kiss.

Kit stepped back. “Shit.” He ran both hands through his hair and then surveyed her, hands on hips, apparently lost for words.

Enya pressed shaking fingers to her lips, her head spinning.

I kissed Kit Fawkes!

$30 Amazon voucher up for grabs!

Kia ora (that's Kiwi for hello!)

Win a $30 Amazon voucher!

Only 99 cents!

Welcome to the December Escape Party - the blog hop of Escape Publishing's December release authors - known collectively as Escape Artists!

There are six of us: Rhian Cahill, Bridget Gray, Coleen Kwan, Caitlyn Nicholas, Jenny Schwartz, and me, Serenity Woods.

We're promoting our new releases that are available for purchase this week from Escape Publishing - Harlequin's new digital branch that's publishing fresh and distinctive voices from Australia and New Zealand.

I'll tell you a bit about my new book, and then you can hop to the other authors' blogs and check out theirs. And there's an added bonus - several chances to win a $30 voucher - and it doesn't matter where you are, New Zealand, Australia, USA, Europe, or the North Pole! (Yes, Santa, you are eligible to enter.)

My competition closes at midnight Friday 14th December, and winners will be announced on Saturday.

Anyway, enough of the boring stuff. Let me tell you about Summer Fling. It's a category-length 60k sexy contemporary set in the beautiful, sub-tropical Northland of New Zealand during a hot and sultry summer. Here's what the story's about:

A love story that starts at the top of the world.

For Chloe, a tandem skydive seems like the perfect opportunity to prove to her ex that she’s not as boring as he declared. But planning to jump and actually jumping are very different things. Luckily, there's a gorgeous instructor who is happy to come up with an ingenious way to distract her.

After escaping captivity in Afghanistan, Garth Rowland spends most of his time outdoors, trying to forget the terrifying memory of being imprisoned and tortured. Then he meets Chloe, who embodies freedom with her sky-blue eyes and hair the colour of the summer sun…

Soon, a one-night stand on the beach quickly leads to a summer fling. But they both have ghosts to exorcise before love can set them free…

The new Escape books are currently only 99 cents! Buy from EscapeAmazon, Kobo, ITunes

It's set just after Christmas, and I know that's going to be weird for any of you northern hemispherites (yes I know that's not a real word) who have Dickensian-style snowy Christmasses. Can you imagine spending Christmas Day around the pool, with a barbecue for Christmas dinner? Or taking the Christmas tree to the beach, baubles and all? Actually lots of us celebrate Yule at midwinter, June 21st, which feels much more like a traditional northern hemisphere Christmas. Our December Christmas is more like a midsummer party, with the sun setting late, ice cream for dessert and the air conditioning on!

Would you fancy a hot Christmas? What's the weather like at Christmas in your part of the world? Leave a comment below for once chance to win - plus there are several other ways to enter - check out the Rafflecopter below :-)

What Matters in the Long Run

Kia ora everyone,

I've been very slack in blogging lately, mainly because my home life has been so busy. And I've been writing! So I have a good excuse :-)

December's going to be a busy month for me though. I have two releases coming out and a possible third. The first will be Making Sense, the second in my Sensual Healing series, from Samhain Publishing. That comes out on the 4th December.

Buy from Amazon
Buy from B&N

The second will be Summer Fling, my previously self-published novel, which Harlequin Australia's new company, Escape Publishing, have bought and will publish in December.

And I'm also working on another self-pub which I hope to bring out around Christmas called His Christmas Present. A bit of overkill, I hear you say! Maybe, but I feel that the books reach different markets and different readers, and this way I'm hoping to cross-market a little and introduce readers to other books of mine they might not ordinarily have bought.

I have booked a blog tour through Author's Angels which begins on December 3rd. I can highly recommend this company, run by DiDi who also runs Guilty Pleasures Blog Reviews. For a reasonable price she does pretty much everything, and all the author has to do is write the blog posts.

However, I have been a bit lax with social networking. There just aren't enough hours in the day! I'd like to do more, but I feel hampered sometimes by being in the southern hemisphere, which means I'm usually on Twitter when the rest of the world is asleep. Plus I'm not sure how many people my Facebook posts are reaching now that they're pushing for people to advertise.

But I'm still here, still writing, and as Maya Banks said, the best publicity an author can do is to keep writing great books. So hopefully my stories will speak for themselves, and readers will continue to enjoy them, and that's all that matters in the long run :-)

Welcome Lynn Cahoon!

It's time for another Lyrical Press author! This week, please welcome Lynn Cahoon to the blog. Lynn has a new release from Lyrical to promote.

A Member of The Council

By Lynn Cahoon

A rogue hunter, a clueless witch and a mission to save an unknowing world.
Parris McCall, owner of the dive bar, The Alibi, has finally constructed a life where her little quirks don’t show or matter to anyone. As for her grandmother's warnings that she’s different, well, she'll cross that bridge if she comes to it. But when Ty walks into her bar, both lives are instantly changed.

Ty Wallace loves his life. How could he not? He’s a powerful human lawyer by day and the Magic Council's rogue witch hunter by night. But after he agrees to substitute on his secretary’s dart team, all hell breaks loose. Now Ty has to help Parris admit who she is before her long-lost relatives kill her.
A Lyrical Press Paranormal Romance

Excerpt –
“Sally knows how to recruit a substitute.” Parris looked in his brown eyes, juggling her darts. “You’ve never played before?”

Ty shot her a smile designed to melt the coldest of hearts. Yes, he knew what he was doing all right. At least in the flirting department. Parris’ knees felt weak looking at him.
“I swear. I’ve never played league before. Beginners luck.” Ty motioned to the dart machine. “You ready or you want to throw a few practice darts?”

Parris’ eyes narrowed. Ha. He’d said he’d never played league before, not ever played before. Sally had brought in a ringer. Confident, she shook her head. “I’m ready to get this over.”
“Pretty sure of yourself aren’t you?” Ty tilted his head to the side, watching her reaction.

“You don’t have to be cocky when you’re good.”
“And you think you’re good?” Ty pressed. “A natural?”

She frowned, her face crinkling. “I have a lot of free time on my hands here when there’s nothing to do except practice.”

Another couple hours and Ty Wallace would be out of her sight, her bar, and her life. She wished erasing him from her thoughts and dreams would be as easy.
